Technical Information Page. Year, Size, Model Identification. Every work day I receive calls from someone looking for parts to restore or repair one of the many models of Penton and KTM motorcycles that were sold from thru I am pretty good at knowing what some of the parts many people are calling about, especially if I know what year, model, and size of motor the bike is.
It saves a lot of time if the caller knows this information before calling. It also helps if the caller has a part number to identify exactly what part that they are looking for.
To identify what year, size, and model bike you have, write down the serial number off of the frame stamped on the steering head.
On the KTM motors, write down the number stamped on the ignition side of the center case right under the cylinder fins. These number are stamped on or around by the steering head. The first number is the year, the next two are the month eg. KTM Motor Identification. The KTM motor serial number also contain a code that identifies what year and what size the motor is. On the motors these numbers can be found on the ignition side - just below the cylinder fins.
The first three numbers are the code. The first number is the year, the next two are the code for the motor size. The following is a list of the different codes used from thru In most cases, the first two or three numbers in a part number identify what size motor it goes to.
There is a date code cast into every motor case around the drive sprocket area towards the lower rear part of the motor. It looks like a small clock with a triangular arrow in the center. The arrow points to a number on the clock indicating the month. There are two numbers under the arrow which indicate the year. There are also part numbers cast into the outside of the center cases. The first two or three numbers are a way of identifying what size the motor is.
It is important for everyone to be able to identify what year and size bike that they have. Most used bikes have the original motors still in the frames, however I have run across situations where the motors have been replaced with a dissimilar year.
Although many of the early KTM motor parts are the same and are interchangeable thru there are differences in some of the parts especially the clutches, push rods, and bearing plates. It not only gives you step by step instructions on how to tear down the motor and rebuild it, it also gives all of the specifications for the bike along with recommended maintenance and adjustment of all of the components on the bike.
For anyone who has just obtained a Penton for the first time, the owners manual is a must. The manual should be read first before tearing into anything on the bike! Owners manuals are available.
The illustrations help in determining if something is missing, what order the parts go in assembly, and how many there should be. The part numbers help you to obtain the exact part that you need. For the thru they are sold by model size. Piston Specifications.KTM specializes in high-performance motorcycles. Motocross is the most popular type but KTM also makes enduro and road bikes. The engine sizes on these bikes vary considerably between models.
The engine type and size depends on the model that you own.

On the engine are two or three metal labels that indicate the engine size and type. The transmission also has a metal label that will tell you what type is installed. Park the KTM on a flat level surface in a place with plenty of light.
Allow the engine to completely cool off before you proceed. Soak a sponge in water. Apply soap to the sponge and clean the top right and left side of the engine. Look at the sides of the engine just below the carburetor and the metal label will be in clear view.
The label will give the size of the vehicle e. Clean the rear of the transmission using the sponge. Just behind the suspension spring will be the metal label that will tell you what type the transmission is. How to read out which engine is in my KTM? Joined: Nov 7, Oddometer: 6. I have til KTM ccm, but the engine should be a ccm from Jan from FinlandDec 9, Joined: May 2, Oddometer: I think that's too short sequence for an engine number. Keep looking. The size in cc is stamped on the cylinder casting somewhere. Can't remember where. There is also a large part number stamping on the left side of engine block between the front sprocket and gear shaft, but you need to remove the side cover to see it.
ADV Sponsors. It was under the sprocket. TsetaDec 10, Joined: Nov 30, Oddometer: Location: On the road. It sure would seem like a LC4. Okay, thanks. Is there only one model of the LC4? Forthere were at least theand LC4 engine types, used in various bike models. Of these, the and the would seem to be quite similar; the main differences being in the piston and cylinder, naturally. The seems to be a more competition-oriented bike, lacking for example the e-start completely.
Perhaps someone with access to better information will be able to tell the engine type directly from your number. On the other hand, good pictures of your engine from various angles would also help in pinpointing the model. Oh so it is a 65 HP engine.
Not good news. Thank you for the help! Daley ladMar 31, How many times have we looked at the steering head tube on a CMF Chrome Moly Frame Penton motorcycle and wondered what do all these numbers mean? First let's address the two types of frame numbers.
The first type consists of 8 digits. This type pertains mainly to the Sachs powered models though I have found KTM powered models using this as well. As stated in several past newsletter articles and the website Production Year Guide, the first digit represents the year i. For example, if the frame number werethis would be a model built in Maywith the remaining digits being the actual serial number.
The second type consists of the same 8 digits but also has an extra 7-,or ahead of the original 8 digits.
How to read out which engine is in my KTM?
These extra digits could be called production codes for the lack of anything else to call them. These digits were only found on the KTM powered models. If the 7- appears, you are looking at an all-new Jackpiner model starting with June through June The and seem to start where the 7- number ends which is June through September This period was the time when the rear conical hub first appeared and numerous design changes started.
To find the year, month, and serial number, you simply disregard the 7- or and look solely at the last 8 digits. For example, would be a model built in Junewith the remaining digits again being the actual serial number. In some cases, frames have been found with no frame numbers stamped in them at all.
It is believed this type of frame was most likely a replacement frame. With the production code, year and month being addressed, what is left? The last five digits. In the past, I would always look at a set of frame numbers and say to others, or myself the 7- or didn't mean too much. The next 3 digits are year and month, and the last five digits are "just the serial number.
Not only is it the key to total production but the year and month production as well when using the year and month part of the frame number. And it's even the key to who has the earliest or latest CMF cc, cc, cc, cc and cc models. Remember the talk about the steel tanker models and V being the very first Penton every produced and how everyone was trying to find steel tankers with the lowest "V" serial number possible?
Now that holds true with the CMF models as well. How do I know this? After compiling over frame numbers, I put them in ascending order by using just the last 5 digits of the serial number, and to my surprise, the year and month part of the frame number automatically ascended in perfect order as well.
What was so interesting about this was that the serial numbers never quit climbing from June to September Another interesting note was that in one or two cases the year or month seemed out of order and did not follow the expected pattern. In these cases, it showed that the frame number given to me was an error, whether it was the year, month or the 5-digit serial number. And in every instance, an error was found and corrected. What this list has shown me to date is that the earliest frame number I have recorded is So we know now that CMF production started in June If the 5-digit serial number started withthis would be the th unit ever produced.
If the 5 digit serial number sequence started withthis would be the 50, unit produced, and that sounds almost impossible. So guessing, I would say that the base serial number was The highest number I have recorded is a So if you subtract 50, from 93, this puts total production from June to September at 43, In a new frame number appeared on the all-new MC5, cc through cc models.
These numbers started with xxxxx and seemed to stay with these first three digits for the next two years, Discussion in ' Thumpers ' started by DeathsbreezeApr 5, Log in or Join. Adventure Rider. DeathsbreezeApr 6, Sorry no pics yet, got her in bits. Though i think the main bearings are shot, there are some nasty noises when turning the engine over. Does the base of the cylinder have a part number on it something like " 30 "? If it does you could search the part number on one of the KTM sights and it would tell you what size and possibly model it came from although that number I got was for a 98 EXC, and the search says it is for a to EXC. Being a 96 2 stroke limits it down to a, probablyor and maybe a or something.

This is located just behind the front forks, behind the headlight if equipped. Many scooter VINs are stamped into the frame rails. Often times you will have to remove scooter bodywork to locate the VIN. We have seen many scooters with VINs stamped into the left side frame rails and some with them stamped into the right side frame rails. Additionally, many scooters include an identification plate or sticker that will aid in scooter identification. Check the front and rear wheel wells along the right or left side.
The letters I, i, O, o, Q, and q are never to be used so as to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0. Character 1 The first character of the VIN tells us which region the motorcycle was manufactured in. Character 2 The second character, when combined with the first character denotes which country the motorcycle was manufactured in. Character 3 The third character is used by powersports manfacturers to identify the vehicle type.
It could be a motorcycle, ATV or scooter. Not every manufacturer uses the same codes. Characters 4 — 9 These characters are known as the Vehicle Descriptor Section. Characters 4 through 8 provide information about the model, engine size and body style options. Character 9 is a check digit that is used to determine if the VIN is correct.
Characters 10 — 17 These characters are known as the Vehicle Identifier Section. The 10th character indicates the marketing model year of the vehicle, not to be confused with the year of production. For example a Honda CBRRR most likely has a date of production in — it was produced for the marketing year.
Characters 11 through 17 indicate the assembly facility, available options and the production number as it rolled off the assembly line.
